What makes a Short Story

Short Stories usually:

  • have a limited number of characters and only one main character;
  • only have one main plot which is not complex;
  • run from 1,000-10,000 words (novels usually start at around 20,000; and
  • are published in books with other short stories. These are usually centered around a specific genre; for example, science fiction.
